Calcium Carbide, also known as calcium acetylide, is a chemical compound with the chemical formula of CaC₂. Calcium Carbide is a grayish-black lump or crystalline (sand- like) powder with a garlic-like odor.

Uses of Calcium Carbide:

1. Acetylene Generation:

Calcium carbide reacts with water to produce acetylene gas, which is then used in welding, cutting, and lighting due to its high combustion temperature.

2. Steelmaking:

Calcium carbide is used in steelmaking to remove sulfur from iron and improve the steel's quality. This process is known as desulfurization.

3. Other Applications:

Calcium carbide is used to generate acetylene gas for carbide lamps. Calcium carbide is used in the production of calcium cyanamide, a fertilizer.
